- 吉貝古定名為嘉貝，因島嶼形狀宛如一枚美麗的螺貝漂浮在海面上，因此先民稱呼這個島嶼為嘉貝嶼，後期以諧音改名為吉貝。吉貝島名來源眾說紛紜，有寫作嘉貝嶼、佳簸嶼（台語發音：Ka-Pu-Si），吉貝也有一古稱-大鯨山，為漁民海上作業所見之西崁山造型如鯨魚，此地名不見於史書,尚存證為武聖殿內一古匾額:雍正年間"威震鯨波"
